Not the most interesting subject for the general public, but as a heads up to builders merchants and retailers for whom public safety in the winter weather is an issue; there will be a national shortage of rock salt through the winter of 2013/14, due to the increasing awareness of the environment and the carbon footprint created by companies.
   
        It is a little-known fact that a large percentage of the rock salt purchased and used in the past two years has been imported from places as far away as Russia and Egypt. It is shipped into ports, on a journey that can mean upto 6 weeks at sea!
    
      Now that this fact has come to light, these big companies are coming under increasing pressure to source their rock salt from nearer to home. The limited amount produced within this country is, sensibly, largely retained for council useage, with the remainder being sold at premium prices once the winter weather arrives.
